GUWAHATI: Irrespective of reasons, time overrun in several central infrastructure projects in Assam is taking its toll on the state.
The Infrastructure and Project Monitoring Division under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) monitors central infrastructure projects costing Rs 150 crore or more. The latest report of the project monitoring division has reflected that as many as 31 central infrastructure projects have not been completed beyond their original schedules.
A few of the central infrastructure projects that have not been completed within their original schedules in Assam are the construction of a new integrated terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati. This project is yet to be completed even after 52 months of its original schedule, March 2021. Now the anticipated date of completion of the project is August 2025.
(ii) The original date of completion of the Numaligarh Refinery Expansion Project 6 MMTPA Refinery project was October 2024. The anticipated date of completion of this project is December 2025, beyond 14 months of the original schedule.
(iii) The four-laning of the NH Project from Jhanjhi to Demow was scheduled to have been completed by March 2024. The anticipated schedule of the project is October 2025, to be delayed by 19 months.
(iv) The four-laning of NH from Rangagara to Kaliabor Tiniali was scheduled to have been completed by December 2018. The anticipated schedule of the project is December 2025. If the project meets the anticipated date of completion, it will be the project with the highest time overrun of 84 months among the 31 central infrastructure projects currently underway in Assam.
(v) The construction of Mangaldai Bypass (NH-15) was originally scheduled to be completed in April 2025. The anticipated schedule of this project is March 2026, 11 months beyond the original schedule.
Delays in infrastructure projects, both of central government agencies and the state government, are a cause of serious concern for the public, who have to bear the brunt. Issues that delay such infrastructure projects in Assam need urgent attention from the authorities concerned for smooth completion of projects.
