GUWAHATI: The xatras and naamghars of the state reverberated with naam kirtans today on the occasion of the 427th death anniversary (tirobhav tithi) of Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhabdev. It is the holy Bhado when the two mahapurush of the state—Srimanta Sankardev and Madhabdev—breathed their last in the 16th century.
The birthplace of Sri Sri Madhabdev, Letekupukhuri, in the Lakhimpurpur district, had naam prasanga reverberating throughout the day today.
Bordowa Than (Batadrava Satra) in the Nagaon district, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev, also had naam prasanga from 4 in the morning today. According to office-bearers of the Than, they conducted Othoro Prasanga (naam prasanga chanted as many as 18 times) today. Some of the naam prasangas are Taal Prasanga, Khul Prasanga, Gopini Naam, Doba Prasanga, etc. The children nearby the Than staged Jhumura composed by Sri Sri Madhabdev, including ‘dadhi manthan’ (the churning of curd).
Barpeta Xatra, various xatras and naamghars of Majuli, and the naamghars in Guwahati organized naam prasangas today.
