TINSUKIA: A top-ranking ULFA (I) leader, Rupam Asom, who remained elusive for years, finally fell into a police dragnet in a joint operation by Tinsukia police and the army along the Assam-Arunachal border on Saturday morning.
Tinsukia Superintendent Abhijit Gurav told the media that Rupam Asom was operating along the Assam-Arunachal border and was involved in extortion and subversive activities, including killing police, Army, and civilians and acts of ambushing. After keeping track of his movement in Namsai, Lohit, Changlang and Margherita during the past 4 months, this operation was launched on Saturday morning. It was led by ASP Mrinmoy Das, SDPO Margherita Dinesh Pratap Singh Rathore and Nitu Changmai OC Lekhapani. The SP said that Rupam, a self-styled brigadier and official commander of ULFA(I), was also involved in the killing of Bordumsa Police Station officer-in-charge Bhaskar Kalita in 2018. Police recovered arms and materials from his possession while the hunt was on for other team members of the ULFA group, said the SP.
