Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the Flood Hazard Zonation Atlas of Assam in New Delhi today, during the annual conference of Relief Commissioners and Disaster Response Forces of the States and Union Territories. The Flood Hazard Zonation Atlas is a satellite-based analysis of flooding patterns in the state.
Union Minister Shah said that following this conference, every relief commissioner should prepare a district disaster management plan for their district within 90 days, because until a district has its disaster management plan in place, the government cannot respond swiftly in the face of a disaster.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the Union Minister for launching the atlas, saying, “This atlas will help us in regulating development in floodplains, promoting flood-resilient agriculture, supporting crop insurance schemes, and preparing disaster management plans, among others. This much-needed atlas will go a long way in mitigating issues related to floods.”
