 'Act tough against teachers working as LIC agents'

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The State Government has asked the authorities concerned to identify government school teachers working in other vocations, including as LIC agents, and take action. The State Government said, "If such teachers do not give up their additional vocations, it (government) will deal with them".

According to official sources, the purpose for issuing this stricture is to make the teachers give absolute concentration on teaching, their prime duty for which they draw a fat salary.

The sources also pointed out that the Government engages the teaching and non-teaching staff in various other non-teaching activities like election duty, census duty, engagement during the NRC update and various health schemes when implemented massively, etc.

Apart from these, the teachers also spend time staging dharna and other agitations to fulfil their demands. Noteworthy, teachers never raise their voices for the well-being of students and their schools.

The recent trend is 'students staging frequent protests against teachers in schools for minor issues'. Some student organizations also make students take to the streets for various demands that have nothing to do with teaching and learning.

According to sources, most of the HSLC unsuccessful students fail in Science, Mathematics and English in most of the government schools. One of the reasons is that teachers for these three subjects are fewer. The few teachers teaching these subjects also lack the required expertise.

Looking after various school affairs like lack of facilities was the duty of school inspectors (SIs) earlier. They used to inspect schools frequently. However, that practice is on the wane now.

Sources said that only holding school heads responsible for the poor results without addressing these issues would not serve the purpose.
