Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging a conspiracy to tamper with the state's electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
In a post on X, Banerjee claimed that BJP agents were submitting thousands of fraudulent Form 6 applications at the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer in West Bengal to allegedly add non-residents and outsiders to the voter list. She termed the move an attempt at "voter hijacking," accusing the BJP of replicating tactics she alleged were used in other states. Banerjee also raised concerns over delays in processing genuine voter applications. She said over 60 lakh legitimate applications were still pending adjudication, while authorities were allegedly fast-tracking bulk submissions of questionable applications. She further claimed that more than 200 people had died due to what she described as a flawed SIR process, calling the situation a direct assault on free and fair elections.
In her letter, the Chief Minister urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to immediately halt the alleged exercise and strictly follow Supreme Court directions. She demanded that no new voters be added after the final electoral roll was published on February 28, 2026. Banerjee alleged that the reported bulk applications were part of a coordinated attempt by the BJP, in conjunction with the ECI, to interfere with the democratic rights of Bengal's people. (ANI)
