SIVASAGAR: One of the most trusted markets for traditional local goods, the Asomi Bohagi Mela is a familiar event for the people of Sivasagar. Like previous years, this year too, the fair began with a vibrant four-day schedule from April 9 to April 12, organized by the Sivasagar district mission management unit of Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLM).
The fair was inaugurated on April 9 at the premises of Tai Ahom Cultural Development Centre in the heart of Sivasagar town by District Development Commissioner Samiran Bora. The event was graced by several dignitaries including Additional District Commissioner Geetalee Duwara, Tai Ahom Students’ Union President Basanta Gogoi, and others.
In his welcome address, Dr Suraj Jyoti Gogoi, District Project Manager of ASRLM, highlighted how such fairs have benefited women members of self-help groups (SHGs) by providing them with a platform to showcase and sell their products.
The Bohagi Mela has already caught the attention of Sivasagar residents. Held ahead of Rongali Bihu, the fair features a wide array of traditional Assamese items made by SHG women, from homemade sweets and rice cakes to ethnic wear, and indigenous food items and organic vegetables. Everything that completes the festive spirit of Rongali Bihu is available under one roof.
Adding to the festive cheer, the event will also feature various games and interactive activities for SHG women, along with cultural programmes every evening during the four-day event, informed Dr Suraj Jyoti Gogoi.
