JORHAT: An Anti-Drug awareness campaign was held at Hahsora Higher Secondary School of Mariani assembly constituency in the district on Saturday which was organized by Seleng Hat Health Club in association with Hahsora H S School. The campaign aimed to eradicate drug addiction and abuse among youths. The chief guest for the campaign was Toshar Pal, a social activist.
Toshar Pal, in his address, stated that the menace of drug abuse is a global challenge that transcends borders, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is a threat that undermines the very fabric of the society, tearing apart families, eroding trust, and robbing individuals of their potential. Pal said that we must recognize that the fight against drug abuse is not merely a battle of policies and enforcement but a collective endeavour that requires the involvement of every member of society.
He mentioned that education plays a pivotal role in our efforts to eradicate drug abuse. It is through awareness and understanding that the individuals are empowered to make informed choices, he said. He urged the educational institutions, community organizations, and families to undertake comprehensive drug education programs, ensuring that the youth are equipped with the knowledge and resilience to make healthy choices.
Journalist Devajit Baruah was present in the event as a guest of honour. Baruah highlighted the importance of law enforcement and called on the gathering to support law enforcement agencies in their mission to disrupt drug trafficking networks and others responsible, and hold them accountable for their actions. Stating that community engagement is the bedrock of any successful anti-drug campaign, he urged everyone to be advocates, allies, and supporters of one another in this battle.
Madhab Gogoi, Principal of Hahsora Higher Secondary School, and Journalist Dhurba jyuti Bhattacharya also spoke in the event. About two hundred students and teachers were present in the event. Toshar Pal has been involved with anti-drug awareness campaigns since 2012. He cycled from Jorhat to Dhubri in March 2015 for anti-drug awareness. He also campaigned at various places of the state like Golaghat, Majuli, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Amguri, Teok, Titabar, and Mariani.
