GORESWAR: The Baihata Chariali–Goreswar–Bangalipara road is in a dire state due to the daily movement of heavy dumpers transporting stones from nearby quarries. The constant heavy traffic has severely damaged the road surface, making travel extremely difficult and dangerous, particularly for small vehicle drivers and students.

The road, which connects Baihata to interior areas like Goreswar, Naokata, and Bangalipara, is vital for daily commuters. Continuous movement of overloaded dumpers has turned the once-smooth road into a stretch filled with deep potholes and muddy pits. Local residents have expressed their frustration over the administration’s inaction despite repeated appeals.

This frustration culminated in a strong protest on Thursday morning when locals blocked the road, demanding an immediate halt to dumper movement until repairs are carried out. The protest saw participation from men, women, and students, who united in their demands. Protesters warned that if no immediate action is taken, the agitation would intensify.

Protesters accused the administration of ignoring public hardship and prioritising the interests of the stone mafia. They urged the government to either halt dumper operations or undertake immediate road repairs. They also called for the enforcement of regulations to control dumper overloading and ensure road safety.

The protest, which lasted several hours, disrupted traffic and witnessed significant participation from local communities, including student unions and social organisations.
