Silchar: Veterans like Mission Ranjan Das and Parimal Shuklabaidya added a “big boys play at night’ twist as the BJP leaderships picked up Sanjib Banik and Rupam Saha as the district unit presidents for Sribhumi and Cachar respectively. For Hailakandi, the party leadership hit a masterstroke as Kalyan Goswami, the municipality chairman facing massive dissidence in the board, was chosen for the district BJP head. Reliable sources confirmed the selections of new presidents of the district BJP units, though the official declaration would be made on Sunday. However, leaders like state BJP general secretary Kanad Purkayastha had already congratulated the three new district presidents in his social media page.
Rupam Saha, a national executive member of the party, was known for his proximity with MP Parimal Shuklabaidya. Amiyo Kanti Das, a forerunner for the Cachar BJP district president was backed by a powerful lobby. Amiyo Kanti, one of the district vice presidents, hit the headline during the recent Dholai bye election as he revolted against the party leadership after being denied nomination and fielded himself as an independent candidate. Amiyo Kanti made serious allegations against Parimal Shuklabaidya. However he later withdrew his nomination after the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma requested him to do so over phone. Party sources hinted that Amiyo withdrew himself from the bye election race following an assurance that he would be compensated with a prestigious post. In this backdrop, Amiyo Kanti came out as a forerunner for the district BJP president post. But finally the party leadership picked up Rupam Saha.
Insiders said, the party leadership were made convinced by the district leaders that if a rebel like Amiyo Kanti was made the president it would send a wrong message and would demoralise the party workers. Shuklabaidya too endorsed the argument and lobbied for his trusted lieutenant Rupam Saha.
Similarly in Karimganj, the Rajya Sabha MP Mission Ranjan Das thwarted the attempts to make Sudip Chakrobarty the party president. The outgoing president Subrata Bhattacharjee gained a few points as his chosen ones were made the Mandal presidents. Both Subrata and Mission Ranjan, whose Rajya Sabha term would expire in 2025, were eyeing for the next Assembly election nomination for the North Karimganj seat. Insiders said, veteran Das finally succeeded in making Sanjib Banik as the party president of Sribhumi unit.
