DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) has initiated the cleaning of the DTP drain from Saturday. In the first phase, the work involves the removal of approximately 30,000 cubic meters of silt and debris.

The drain, measuring an average depth of 1 meter, width of 6 meters, and a length of 5,000 meters, is being cleaned in the first phase. The cleaning process is being carried out using advanced equipment, including super suckers, Poclains, and barges, depending on the convenience and requirement of each section. According to officials, the entire drain cleaning project is expected to be completed by March 2025.

The Dibrugarh Town Protection (DTP) drain, a crucial storm water drainage system spanning 9.5 km, has been failing to flush out rain water because of illegal encroachment and  dumping of garbage and plastic in it. This year, Dibrugarh town faced severe waterlogging problem and as a result the town was under water for several days.

The DTP drain, which originates from Seujpur (zero point), passes through densely populated areas in the heart of Dibrugarh before reaching the Sessa river, covering a total distance of 9.5 km. A significant portion of the drain, about 5.56 km, falls within Dibrugarh town, while the remaining 3.85 km is located on the outskirts.
