Assam: Government issues notification for Rabha language medium

Boko: The state government’s education department has issued government notification for the much anticipated Rabha language medium on Thursday evening. There was a lot of excitement among the Rabha community and the Bebak Rabha Kraurang Runchum in short BRKR (Nikhil Rabha Sahitya Sabha). According to the notification, a total 105 lower primary schools in Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts have been notified as “Rabha language medium” by the state education department including 81 primary schools in Goalpara district and 24 primary schools in Kokrajhar district.

The strong steps taken by the Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Dr. Ronoj Pegu for the Rabha community have been specially thanked by the general secretary of BRKR Rajkumar Rabha during a press conference. Rabha further said that in the first phase, 105 lower primary schools have been introduced in Rabha language. Regarding the appointment of the teacher for the Rabha Medium, Rajkumar Rabha said that as per the Assam Chief Minister and Education Minister, there are many teachers who have knowledge on the Rabha language are working in the Assamese medium. “However, the government will appoint Rabha language teachers in the future,” added Rabha.

Bebak Rabha Kraurang Runchum (Nikhil Rabha Sahitya Sabha) and other Rabha organisation’s have been demanding the introduction of the Rabha Language medium in schools for a long time. Rajkumar Rabha said that this is a historic moment for the Rabha that the State government has  issued notification for the much awaited Rabha language medium under the supervision of the Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Ronoj Pegu.

Regarding the notification, All Rabha Students Union (ARSU) also reacted as the president of ARSU Motilal Rabha said,  “The All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU) welcomes the Government of Assam’s notification (vide letter no. E.No. 632888/68 dated Dispur, the 15th of May, 2025) for the implementation of Rabha language as the medium of instruction (MoI) in 105 Lower Primary Schools is initially at the foundational stage. It reflects a positive commitment of the Government to uphold linguistic rights and promote inclusive education in Assam. This is indeed a matter of great joy and pride for the entire Rabha community. The notification marks a significant step towards the realization of our long-standing demand for Rabha Medium Education led by BRKR along with other community organizations.”

On the other hand, the General Secretary of ARSU Dr. Subhash Rabha said, “The introduction of Rabha as the medium of instruction will not only contribute to the preservation and enrichment of the Rabha language but also ensure that Rabha-speaking children will receive foundational education in their mother tongue, which is essential for better learning outcomes and cognitive development.” Rabha further said, “This is certainly a welcome beginning, but we emphasize the need for further expansion of Rabha medium education in a phased manner and urge the Government to take concrete steps to provide adequate teacher training, learning materials, and curriculum support in the Rabha language for successful implementation of the Rabha Medium in Schools. We extend our sincere thanks to the Government of Assam for this significant initiative.”
