SIVASAGAR: The historic premises of Rang Ghar, built in 1746 by Swargadeo Pramatta Singha, came alive with colour and festivity as the 17th edition of the Greater Rangpur Rongali Bihu was celebrated with grandeur and tradition. This vibrant event was organized by the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), marking the arrival of Bohag, the Assamese New Year on Tuesday.
Historically, during the reign of Swargadeo Rudra Singha, Bihu was celebrated at the Rang Ghar Bakori (courtyard), where it was accorded royal dignity. Reviving that ancient tradition, the celebration transformed the historic monument into a cultural epicenter of unity and heritage.
The day’s festivities began in the morning with ATASU Central President Basanta Gogoi lighting the ceremonial lamp and hoisting the organization’s flag. This was followed by maidam tarpan.
The main ceremony was inaugurated by Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika, who attended as the chief guest. In his address, Minister Hazarika emphasized that the Rang Ghar Bihu stands as a symbol of peace and communal harmony and praised the organizers for keeping the tradition alive.
The event featured mesmerizing husori performances by groups from Nimaijan, Jhanjiporiya, Moran Enajori, and Ujoni Rongmon of Digboi, among others, infusing the celebration with joyous rhythm and energy.
One of the most captivating highlights of the celebration was the arrival of the symbolic Swargadeo, portrayed by Abhijit Sensowa. In a grand cultural procession, he was ceremonially escorted on an elephant from the premises of Talatal Ghar to Rang Ghar, accompanied by the sound of traditional dhul and doba. The procession was officially flagged off by Mayur Borgohain, President of the Tai Ahom Development Council.
Abhijit Sensowa expressed deep honour and joy at being chosen as the symbolic Swargadeo and conveyed his heartfelt wishes for peace and harmony across the state.
Adding a literary dimension to the occasion, a commemorative book titled ‘Rang Gharor Ronshinga’ was also released, aligning with the spirit of Rongali Bihu and preserving the cultural legacy of Assam.
