GOLAGHAT: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday inaugurated the 100 bedded Sarupathar Co-District Civil Hospital. He also dedicated an oxygen plant built with the CSR fund of Numaligarh Refinery at a function held at Sarupathar.

Terming the day as important for the people of Sarupathar, Chief Minister Sarma said that the co-district hospital built with a financial outlay of Rs. 15 crore has facilities like nine out-patient departments, operation theatre, emergency ward, resuscitation room, special newborn care unit, medicine and paediatric ward, two labour rooms etc. Moreover, the oxygen plant built with the help of CSR fund of Numaligarh Refinery Limited will help the hospital in giving critical care  during emergency. He also said that many more advanced medical care will be added to the hospital.

The Chief Minister moreover, said that 20 thousand women received the benefits of orunodoi scheme. However, 10 thousand more beneficiaries will be added to the list from Sarupathar Assembly constituency. As a result, several women from the co-district will become empowered.

MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLA Biswajit Phukan and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

The Chief Minister also attended an open session organized at the Shivaji Rai Samanbay Xetra in the historic town of Sarupathar, commemorating the Golden Jubilee of the Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha.

Speaking on the occasion, Sarma praised the Gorkhas of Assam for their unwavering commitment to the development of both the Nepali and Assamese literature and culture. He noted that the Gorkhas, born in Assam and educated through the Assamese language, have tirelessly worked towards the development of Nepali language and culture. Reflecting on the Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha’s fifty-year-long legacy, he acknowledged the organization as a leading literary and intellectual body for the Gorkha community, whose contributions have significantly shaped both the Nepali and Assamese literary spheres in Assam. He also acknowledged the Gorkhas’ proud and rich heritage, emphasizing their migration across Assam and India since pre-historic times.

The CM spoke about the comparative study of Assamese and Nepali languages, and underscored the contributions of prominent figures such as Hari Prasad Gorkha Rai. A prominent writer from the Awahan era, Gorkha Rai, alongside other notable figures like Dhanbahadur Sonar and Govinda Chandra Paira, played a key role in fostering discourse between Assamese and Nepali literary traditions. He acknowledged the immense contributions of the Gorkhas on Assamese society and culture, citing the example of Chabilal Upadhyaya. A prominent leader in the struggle for India’s independence, Upadhyaya pioneered the establishment of several educational institutions, including Biswanath College, in the Assamese medium. He emphasized that Upadhyaya’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
