BOKO: A public meeting was organized by Garo National Council (GNC) at Santipur village in Chaygaon constituency under Kamrup district on Wednesday. The main objective of the meeting was to demand formation of Garo Autonomous Council. More than 5,000 people from Kamrup and Goalpara districts took part in the meeting.

The meeting was presided over by Enindra Marak, Kamrup district president of GNC. More than 10 Garo organizations from Assam took part in the meeting.

Arbitson Momin, advisor of GNC, said that Garo people who live in Assam had strongly opposed Sixth Schedule status to Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council before creation of Garo Autonomous Council. "If the government will not give Garo Autonomous Council then the Garo people of Assam will oppose Sixth Schedule status to RHAC. The State Government tried to give the Garo Development Council, but the Garo people refused," he said.

He also added that Garo people who live in Assam would not be included in Meghalaya. "Assam's Garo people will not give an inch of Assam's land to Meghalaya," he said.

During the meeting, people took out a protest rally to demand Garo Autonomous Council instead of Garo Development Council. The rally started from GNC Santipur office to Santipur Chok and returned to office.
