SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday visited the Shillong Government College of Engineering, following the recent approval granted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to begin undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering from the academic year 2025–26.
Accompanied by officials from the Education Department and Shillong Polytechnic College, the Chief Minister inspected the college building at Mawlai Kynton Massar in East Khasi Hills district. During the visit, he held consultations with faculty members to understand the college’s infrastructural needs and academic requirements.
He assured that “all concerns will be addressed to upscale the infrastructure for making the Shillong Government College of Engineering operational as mandated by AICTE.”
Faculty members from Shillong Polytechnic also raised the need for research support in the field of science and technology. Responding to the demand, the Chief Minister stated, “Currently the Chief Minister’s Research Fellowship (CMRF) funds research related to arts and culture, which will be expanded to accommodate research in the Science and Technology field.”
The Shillong Government College of Engineering is the first government-run engineering college in Meghalaya. The Letter of Approval (LoA) from AICTE was issued to the Principal Secretary of Education on April 30. The institute is affiliated with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
The college will offer two undergraduate programmes—Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering—with an initial intake of 30 students each in the 2025–26 academic session.
