Containment Measures in Shillong, Tura and Jowai by Meghalaya Government

SHILLONG: Following a surge in COVID-19 cases, The Meghalaya government on Wednesday decided to impose containment measures in the Shillong urban agglomeration, Tura and Jowai towns from May 1 to May 10. International border trade will also remain suspended for the time being.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has informed that all public, political, social, religious gatherings will not be allowed in these three places during these days. However, he added that weddings and funerals are permitted subject to adherence of COVID-19 protocols.

The Deputy Chief Minister also informed that though educational institutions in these towns will be closed yet the Board examinations will go on as scheduled. All sporting activities too have been suspended. He also said that the offices of all private institutions (except those providing essential services) will remain shut during the mentioned days. The non-essential Central government offices will also remain shut; and, the staff can work from home, he added.

Commercial vehicles will operate with one-fourth of the seating capacity. Entry into these three towns has been restricted and only those with special permission and those involved in emergency services will be allowed to enter. Essential shops will be allowed to open, subject to regulations. Among the allowed activities are in the Construction sector including shops dealing in hardware, electrical, mobile-repair, and automobile as well as services in banking, post, telegraph and telecommunication sectors.

People moving for availing Healthcare services (including emergency and vaccination), agriculture and veterinary services, students appearing for examinations, teachers and staff on examination duties will be allowed. Vehicles which include e-commerce, supply of pharmaceutical and home delivery services are also allowed to move.
