SHILLONG: With only 51% of expectant mothers in Resubelpara, the headquarters of North Garo Hills district, availing antenatal care (ANC) services, health officials are urging greater participation to ensure early diagnosis and timely medical intervention.
Speaking at a health camp focused on ANC, Dr. N. R. Marak, SDM&HO cum DNO Aspirational Block, expressed concern over the low registration rate. With a target to achieve zero infant and maternal deaths, expecting mothers, especially those with high-risk pregnancies, must register under the ANC programme to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, he said.
The camp, organized by the District Medical & Health Office, brought together medical experts, government officials, and frontline health workers to enhance ANC services in the Aspirational Block of North Garo Hills. The initiative provided a full spectrum of maternal healthcare, including on-the-spot OPD screenings, ultrasounds, and expert consultations with gynaecologists Dr. Vince Chimpoo M. Momin and Dr. Abida M. Marak. For many pregnant women, the event was more than a routine check-up-it was a crucial step toward safer motherhood.
Assistant Commissioner Torali K. Marak, attending as the chief guest, emphasized the importance of early ANC check-ups and first-trimester registration. Antenatal care is the foundation of maternal and newborn health. Timely intervention and regular check-ups can prevent complications, ensuring safe deliveries and healthy babies, she stated. Acknowledging the government's efforts toward eliminating preventable maternal and infant deaths, she also commended the relentless dedication of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), who serve as the critical link between healthcare services and communities.
