SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday chaired a high-level review meeting with all deputy commissioners and officials of the State Disaster Management Authority to assess monsoon preparedness and streamline the state’s disaster response mechanisms.
He emphasized the need for a swift and coordinated response system, with a clear directive to expedite relief operations and ensure readiness at every administrative level. The Chief Minister instructed all DCs to immediately convene meetings with their respective Block Disaster Management Committees (BDMCs), to be followed by engagements with Village Disaster Management Committees (VDMCs) and Village Executive Committees (VECs).
Stressing the importance of proactive planning, Sangma called for a comprehensive review of the Disaster Emergency Helpline and full activation of VDMCs across districts through their respective VECs. Districts yet to conduct disaster preparedness drills were ordered to do so without delay.
Additionally, all relevant departments were tasked with drafting area-specific guidelines and analyzing data on water bodies and soil composition to identify flood- and landslide-prone zones, enabling precise and pre-emptive mitigation measures.
