Meghalaya Govt to Set Up Police Outposts Along Border with Assam

GUWAHATI: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that a number of police outposts along the inter-state border with Assam will be set up.

He reiterated that the state government has finalized several locations for the same.

CM Sangma however said that setting up of these outposts in "sensitive areas" along the border will depend on the talks between the two states.

"But we will set up the outposts in the areas where there are no disputes," he added. He asserted that setting up outposts in sensitive areas will lead to "more tension, aggression, and differences."

Further, CM Sangma also said that he has spoken to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on the clash between locals and Assam police at Longkhuli village in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya.

Both have decided that there should not be any further escalation and should try to maintain peace.

Earlier, a clash broke out in the Kylling-Iongkhuli area at the Assam-Meghalaya border on Sunday morning after an electric line was set up by Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL). Sources stated that the Assam Police tried to pull down the MeECL poles following which a clash broke during which the Mawhati MDC Charles Marngar was assaulted.

Congress legislator from East Shillong Ampareen Lyngdoh reacting to the incident said, "A lady from the area called me a few hours ago informing that the Assam police personnel have stormed the village. The lady wanted me to inform the police headquarters."

It may be mentioned that the incident comes at a time when both the Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya have stressed the need of going beyond the status quo on the border during their meeting held in Shillong on July 23.
