SHILLONG: Meghalaya has achieved a significant milestone in its tourism development by securing Rs 199 crore under the “Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale” scheme for 2024-25. The funds are part of the Rs 3,295.76 crore allocated to 23 states across India to foster world-class tourism infrastructure and sustainable economic growth.
The sanctioned amount will fund two transformative projects proposed by the Department of Tourism: the redevelopment of Umiam Lake and the establishment of an iconic tourist destination at Mawkhanu, each allocated Rs 99.27 crore. Meghalaya stands among one of the top five beneficiaries with a sanction of INR 198.5 crores, a remarkable achievement for the region. Particularly, Meghalaya surpassed all other Northeastern states and many larger states in the country, none of which received more than INR 100 crores except for Assam.
The redevelopment of Umiam Lake aims to transform it into a premier tourist hub with facilities such as a crafts village, arts and culture pavilion, botanical garden, and amphitheater, alongside improved roads and utilities. Currently attracting 16,222 visitors annually, Umiam is projected to host 1,27,750 tourists post-development, generating 1,168 direct jobs and 2,675 indirect jobs. Luxury resorts, glamping sites, and eco-friendly infrastructure will enhance its appeal to leisure and business travelers while ensuring sustainable development.
At Mawkhanu, the sanctioned funds will support the creation of a vibrant cultural and tourism destination featuring a Meghalayan Experience Theme Park, Festival Ground, and Amphitheater. Designed to attract 2.5 lakh visitors annually, the project is expected to generate 1,016 direct jobs and 2,327 indirect jobs. The site will also host marquee events like the Cherry Blossom Festival, celebrating local arts and culture, and future public-private partnership initiatives such as an amusement park, convention center, luxury accommodations, and a golf course will further enhance its vibrancy and economic sustainability.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed pride in the state’s achievement, stating, “This sanction reaffirms Meghalaya’s commitment to creating world-class, sustainable tourism destinations. These projects will not only boost our economy but also preserve our rich cultural and ecological heritage for generations to come.”
With this funding, Meghalaya continues to set a benchmark for tourism development in India, showcasing its dedication to sustainability, cultural preservation, and community engagement while establishing the state as a global tourism destination.
