Mizoram: ZPM To Stake Claim For Government Formation In Chakma Autonomous District Council

AIZAWL: The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), after securing a majority in the 20-member council of the Chakma Autonomous District Council, is gearing up to take power in Mizoram's Chakma Autonomous District Council. The party representatives will meet the Governor, Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati at Raj Bhavan on Monday for a formal claim of government formation.

The shift in political power came after five members of the Mizo National Front (MNF) defected to the ZPM last Wednesday, significantly altering the composition of the council. This was following the removal of MNF Chief Executive Member (CEM) Rasik Mohan Chakma through a no-confidence motion in a council session on December 11.

The MNF had earlier formed the 11th CADC after winning 10 seats in the May elections of 2023, but it is currently left with only one, that of Rasik Mohan Chakma. The result of defections, on the other hand, allows ZPM to win presently with 10 seats while, collectively, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is able to possess nine members along with lone remaining MNF seat.

This political turn is an important development in the governance of the CADC. Now, the ZPM is able to assume leadership of the administration. The party leaders have high hopes of forming a stable government to address the council's developmental agenda.

The ZPM is expected to formally assume power following the Governor's decision, ushering in a new era in the political history of the CADC.
