GUWAHATI: The North East Frontier Railway Sports Association (NFRSA) claimed their first-ever Guwahati Premier League Football title, defeating Pride East Mavericks in a thrilling final at Judges Field here today. The game was decided via sudden death after regular time and a tie-breaker failed to determine the winner. NFRSA emerged victorious with a 7-6 margin in the nerve-wracking title clash.

The final, held on a Sunday evening under floodlights, provided an electrifying atmosphere for the players and fans alike. Despite the cold weather, a large crowd gathered to witness the high-stakes encounter.

The 90 minutes of regulation time showcased quality football from both teams. NFRSA struck 35th minute of the first half to take the lead.  Pride East Mavericks scored a dramatic equalizer just a few seconds before the final whistle, pushing the match into a nail-biting conclusion.

Sibra Narzary gave NFRSA the lead in the 35th minute, heading in a well-placed corner kick to make it 1-0. However, Pride East Mavericks responded with relentless pressure but failed to find the equalizer before halftime.

The second half was equally engaging, with Mavericks creating more chances as NFRSA adopted a slightly defensive approach. Twice Mavericks came close to scoring, but NFRSA’s goalkeeper, Birkhang Doimary, made outstanding saves to keep his side ahead.

In the dying moments of the game, Mavericks finally broke through. Amber Chetri (90+5 min) scored a stunning equalizer in the final minute by heading in a corner kick with precision.

In the tiebreaker, both sides successfully converted their five spot kicks. However, in the sudden death, NFRSA scored while Mavericks missed the target.

The champion NFRSA team walked away with a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh, while the runners-up Pride East Mavericks pocketed Rs 7 lakh.Two Semi finalists United Chirang Duar and FC Green Valley also received cash award of Rs 1.5 lakh each.

Individual awards: Player of the Tournament: Debjit Basak (NFRSA). Best Goalkeeper: Meghraj Basumatary (Pride East Mavericks). Player of the Final: Sibra Narzary (NFRSA). Most Promising Player of the Meet: Samiran Goyari (ASEBSC).
