Guwahati: With the view to upgrade the Rupsi Airport in lower Assam, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has requested the Assam government to provide 200 acres of land.
This was stated by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, in answer to an unstarred question by Kokrajhar MP, Joyanta Basumatary, in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Rupsi Airport is a domestic airport serving the towns of Kokrajhar and Dhubri in Assam. It is located at Rupsi in the Kokrajhar district. The airport serves the people of the lower part of Assam in air travel. The airport currently covers an area of 447 acres at an elevation of 131 feet above mean sea level. It has one paved runway with a length of 6,000 feet.
In his reply, Union Minister Mohol said that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has requested 200 acres of land from the Government of Assam for the upgradation of Rupsi Airport.
Regarding the security aspect at the airport, the Minister stated that Rupsi Airport is manned by Assam Police. “Based on threat perception, MHA recommends bringing the airport under CISF security cover. At present, there is no proposal to hand over airport security of Rupsi airport to CISF,” he added.
At present, a few flights per week operate from the airport as a stopover for flights between Kolkata and Guwahati. Flight operations were suspended at the airport for almost one year, before the resumption of flights in October 2024.
