Guwahati Municipal Corporation streamlines building permission

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: It takes 30 days to issue permits for the construction buildings now. Earlier, it took mot less than 75 days for such permission. It is a wonder that the online system and the absence of brokers can do in office works.

Earlier, offline applications for seeking permissions for buildings were prevalent. In that system, brokers had a role. Earlier, GMDA (Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority) took at least 30 days to process an application and send it to the GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation). The civic body did take another 45 days to issue permission for buildings.

GMC associate planner Rajib Neog said, "Now we receive only online applications for building permits. The system has become transparent now. Brokers have nothing to do with this system. Even those seeking permission for constructing buildings need not come to us. They have to submit their online applications with the correct information. Now GMDA takes ten days to send such an application to us. We can clear an application in 20 days.

"The GMDA issues planning permits for buildings after verifying land documents and land zoning as per its master plan that is valid up to 2025. We issue the building permit after examining the drawing.

"There are different zones – greenbelts where we allow only farmhouses and the eco-sensitive zone where we don't allow any construction. There are also commercial and residential zones without height restrictions."
