Dergaon is located in the district of Jorhat. It falls under Kaliabor Lok Sabha Constituency. Dergaon town also functions as a municipality. It has well-connected roads and Baruah Bamun Gaon railway station is its closest railway station.

Deragaon Assembly Constituency: Name & Number:

Dergaon assembly constituency is a part of Assam's 126 assembly constituencies and is located in Jorhat district and falls under Kaliabor Lok Sabha Constituency. It bears the number 97. The constituency has a reservation for Scheduled Caste candidates.

Parliamentary Constituency:

Kaliabor Lok Sabha Constituency is a part of Assam's fourteen Lok Sabha Constituencies which comprises assembly segments such as Sarupathar (94), Golaghat (95), Dergaon (97), Bokakhat (93), Dhing (83), Batadroba (84), Rupohihat (85), Samaguri (88), Kaliabor (89) and Khumtai (96). In the Lok Sabha election held in 2019, Gaurav Gogoi, a candidate of the Indian National Congress had won a seat as the Member of Parliament from Kaliabor Lok Sabha Constituency by defeating Moni Madhab Mahanta from Asom Gana Parishad

District:

Jorhat is a district situated in Upper Assam with its headquarters located at Jorhat city. As per Census India 2011, the district covers a geographical area of 2851 square kilometers. Jorhat has a population of 10,92,256 which includes 5,56,805 males and 5,35451 females. 

Number of towns:

The only town under Dergaon Assembly Constituency is Dergaon town. It is located 232km from Dispur, the capital of Assam. It consists of ten wards, and elections are conducted every five years for each ward. 

Number of inhabited villages:

There are about 87 villages under the Dergaon assembly constituency. Few major villages located in the constituency are Baruah Bamun Gaon, Batiporia Lukumai Gaon, and Jelehua Gaon. 

Assembly Status:

The current MLA of the Dergaon Assembly Constituency is Bhabendra Nath Bharali of Asom Gana Parishad. The seat of Dergaon Assembly has a reservation for Scheduled Caste candidates only.

The total population of Dergaon Assembly Constituency is 2,30,593, of which 80.61% is rural, and 19.39% is urban. 

Number of households:

Dergaon has about 31,199 households.

Dergaon assembly constituency has water facilities of Over Hand Tank (OHT) and tap water from a treated source. The residents of Dergaon also enjoy the facilities of tube well and borehole. There is also an availability of fire-fighting services at Dergaon.

There is domestic electrification at Dergaon. The availability of industrial and commercial electrification and road lighting is evident at a few points at Dergaon.

While Dergaon itself functions as a municipality, the basic civic infrastructure of Dergaon is taken care of by Dergaon Municipal Corporation.

Polling percentage for last three years:

Dergaon assembly constituency witnessed a polling percentage of 73.41% in Lok Sabha Election of 2019, whereas it had witnessed a polling percentage of 82.22% in 2016 Assembly Election.

Result of last five election:

1. In the 1991 Assembly election, Hemprakash Narayan of the Indian National Congress was the winner of the assembly seat with 39.4% of the overall votes.

5. In 2016, Bhabendra Nath Bharali of Asom Gana Parishad won the assembly seat with 52.3% of the total votes. He is also the current Member of Assam Legislative Assembly representing Dergaon assembly constituency.

  • Assam Assembly election of 2016 saw Bhabendra Nath Bharali of Asom Gana Parishad as the winner of the seat by securing 52.3% of the overall votes.
  • Aroti Hazarika Kachari of Indian National Congress was the runner up with 38.81% of the total votes.
  • Independent candidates, Rita Das and Bhuban Chandra Saikia secured 3% and 2.67% of the total votes, respectively.
  • Ajit Hazarika of Nationalist Congress Party secured 1.52% of the total votes.
  • While 1.7% of the votes was given to "None of the Above".

The candidates who contested in the 2016 Assembly Election are Bhabendra Nath Bharali of Asom Gana Parishad, Aroti Hazarika Kachari of the Indian National Congress, independent candidates Rita Das and Bhuban Chandra Saikia, and Ajit Hazarika of Nationalist Congress Party. Bhabendra Nath of BJP emerged as the winner with 63079 votes and is the current MLA of Dergaon assembly constituency.

 Work done in last five years:

The current MLA of Dergaon Assembly Constitution had constructed and made improvements of roads in many sections of the constituency. He also distributed land lease and allocation letters to the landless indigenous people.
