Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam is slowly improving, but the death toll from flood-related incidents has reached 97. Floodwaters are still affecting 15 districts, according to the latest Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin issued on Thursday, August 6.
The bulletin said 481 villages and 39 revenue circles are still affected by floods. The Dhansiri (South) river at Numaligarh is flowing above the danger level. However, no river is currently above the highest flood level.
The affected districts are Golaghat, Sivasagar, Udalguri, Kamrup Metropolitan, Kamrup, Nagaon, Darrang, Sonitpur, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Jorhat, Charaideo, Karbi Anglong and Dhemaji.
Around 1.68 lakh people are still affected by the floods, while more than 14,382 hectares of farmland remain under water.
Golaghat has the highest number of affected people at 54,085, followed by Sivasagar with 49,515, Jorhat with 27,842 and Charaideo with 21,486.
The government has opened 50 relief camps and 83 relief distribution centres. Around 10,111 people are staying in relief camps, while 35,596 people are receiving help from relief distribution centres.
Sivasagar has the highest number of people in relief camps, with 7,005 people. Jorhat has 1,270, Nagaon 1,016, Golaghat 589 and Darrang 231.
Floodwaters have also damaged farmland and roads in several districts. Some roads are still underwater or have been covered by floodwaters.
Relief work and restoration efforts are continuing as authorities keep a close watch on river levels and the flood situation.
