Guwahati: The Assam government has procured 2.19 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of paddy within the first 100 days of the BJP-led government, marking a significant step towards strengthening assured procurement for farmers across the state.
As per the government, Assam has set an ambitious target of procuring 10 lakh MT of paddy annually to ensure that farmers receive better returns for their produce through assured procurement at enhanced Minimum Support Prices.
The government said that more than 2 lakh MT of paddy has already been procured directly from farmers, referred to as Annadatas, during the first 100 days of its current tenure.
The initiative is aimed at providing farmers with a reliable market for their produce while supporting their income and reducing uncertainty over paddy sales. The government has emphasised that the annual procurement target of 10 lakh MT will help expand the reach of the procurement system and ensure greater participation of farmers.
The 2.19 lakh MT procurement achieved in just 100 days is being presented by the government as an early indication of its commitment to strengthening Assam’s agricultural sector and improving support for farmers.
