Guwahati: The North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union under the NRL unit has decided to suspend the movement of fuel tankers carrying petroleum products from Assam to Meghalaya amid escalating tensions between the two states.
Under the decision, tankers transporting petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Assam to Meghalaya will remain off the roads until further notice. The union said the move was prompted by concerns over the safety of Assam-registered drivers and tourists following alleged attacks in Meghalaya.
The union has urged the Meghalaya government to take effective measures to ensure the safety of Assam-registered vehicles and restore normalcy. It also called for strict action against those responsible for the alleged violence and harassment.
Meanwhile, today, Assam and Meghalaya held a joint meeting in Guwahati to discuss measures to restore normalcy and ensure safe movement of people and vehicles.
The Meghalaya government expressed regret over the 19th August violence in Shillong and assured Assam of action against those involved. More than 3,770 Assam-registered vehicles have reportedly been escorted safely into Assam, while control rooms in both states continue to assist stranded travellers.
