Jogighopa: AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal on Thursday called on the Centre to declare the ongoing floods in Assam a national disaster and provide a Rs 10,000 crore relief package for rehabilitation and recovery.
Speaking at a public meeting in Jogighopa in Bongaigaon district, Ajmal also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the flood-affected areas and assess the situation on the ground.
He said the recent floods in Sivasagar had demonstrated communal harmony, with people from different communities helping one another during the crisis.
"People of all communities have stood together during the floods. Attempts are still being made to create divisions, but such efforts should not succeed," Ajmal said.
Furthermore, the AIUDF chief said that visits by ministers alone would not solve the problems of flood-hit families. He urged the Union government to announce a special financial package and provide Rs 10 lakh as compensation to every affected family for rebuilding damaged homes.
Ahead of the Assembly elections, Ajmal also took a swipe at the ruling establishment, saying voters would remember how the flood situation was handled.
Listing AIUDF's relief initiatives, he said the party plans to assist in constructing 50,000 houses for affected families, distribute 5 lakh mekhela chadors to women, provide financial aid to students, and continue medical relief in flood-hit areas. He also claimed that medicines worth Rs 3 crore had already been distributed in the affected districts.
