Guwahati: Tension prevailed at Bamunimaidam in Guwahati on Monday as authorities carried out an eviction drive at a Railway Colony, demolishing around 60 houses allegedly built illegally on railway land.
The operation was conducted by the Railway Police with support from Assam Police and central security forces. A large security contingent was deployed as residents tried to resist the demolition and stood in front of the excavators.
Officials had reportedly issued eviction notices earlier, asking residents to vacate the area by August 21. The deadline was later extended by three days. However, as the residents did not leave the premises, authorities proceeded with the eviction.
The affected families said they had requested more time to relocate, claiming that the short deadline was inadequate to arrange accommodation and move their belongings.
Residents also highlighted the difficulties faced by families with children attending school. They said finding rental accommodation within a few days was particularly challenging amid high housing costs.
Some residents questioned the reported proposal to develop a garden at the site, saying authorities should first consider the situation of families displaced by the eviction. They also pointed to existing bathroom tanks and other structures at the location.
Residents claimed that rents in the area could cost between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000, making it difficult for several families to immediately find alternative homes.
Despite repeated appeals for additional time, the eviction and demolition continued under tight security.
With their houses demolished, the affected families are now struggling to find alternative accommodation and make arrangements for their immediate needs.
