Foreign-Origin Cigarettes Worth Rs 62 Lakh Seized in Mizoram’s Champhai; One Held

A total of 48 cases of foreign-origin cigarettes were recovered during the search, they said.

Aizawl: The Assam Rifles said it seized foreign-origin cigarettes worth Rs 62.4 lakh and apprehended one person in Mizoram’s Champhai district.

As per the Assam Rifles, the cigarettes were seized during a joint operation with the Legal Metrology Department on March 31 in the general area of Aizawl Road in Champhai, as part of efforts to curb illegal trade in border areas.

A total of 48 cases of foreign-origin cigarettes were recovered during the search, they said.

"AssamRifles in a joint operation with Legal Metrology Department Champhai launched a search operation in general area of Aizawl Road, Champhai, Mizoram on 31 March 26. During the operation, the team recovered a total of 48 cases of foreign-origin cigarettes worth ₹62.4 lakhs," Assam Rifles wrote on X on Wednesday.

The seized contraband along with the apprehended individual has been handed over to the Legal Metrology Department, Champhai, for further investigation and legal action.

Meanwhile, the security forces in close coordination with multiple security agencies, carried out a series of high-impact operations across Manipur in March 2026, striking a significant blow against drug trafficking and illegal cultivation.

Key achievements include the apprehension of multiple drug peddlers and NCB-wanted criminals, recovery of large quantities of WY tablets, brown sugar, heroin and other contraband valued at over Rs 13 crore along with cash, vehicles and weapons.

"In addition, a multi-agency team successfully destroyed six acres of illegal poppy cultivation in Churachandpur district curbing narcotics production at its source," Assam Rifles said.
