Guwahati: Former Assam minister and senior Congress leader Chandan Kumar Sarkar passes away at an age of 65 in Bongaigaon on Monday. Sarkar was admitted at the Lower Assam Hospital in Bongaigaon where he breathed his last.

Sarkar was appointed as the Irrigation Minister in the erstwhile Tarun Gogoi government and this sudden death of the senior Congress leader has come as a news of utter shock and dismay for the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).

Conveying a condolence for the departed soul, APCC president Ripun Bora offered his deep regards to the bereaved family of South Abhayapuri legislator Sarkar. Borah states, “We got to know about this sad news in the wee hours on Monday and this certainly is an upsetting news for us as three days from today, we had held meetings and discussions in his presence and in fact, yesterday itself, I was in touch with him two to three times on the Panchayat poll issue. Chandan Sarkar was like a wealth for us in our Congress party. In the worst days of the Congress party, during the Assam Agitation, it was Sarkar who with Dr. Bhumidhar Barman, had put all his efforts in keeping the party united and strong. He was an open-mouthed, confident leader of Congress and his proactive quality will always be remembered.”

Ripun Bora and some other Congress leader are also scheduled to visit late Sarkar’s residence in Bongaigaon who will also attend the last rights of the former minister.

A colleague of the yesteryears, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma too expressed condolences at the demise of Sarkar.

In a condolence message, Himanta while wishing eternal peace for the departed soul expressed his condolences to the bereaved family of Chandan Sarkar.
