Silchar, Assam – In a significant boost to air travel in Assam’s Barak Valley, IndiGo Airlines has announced the launch of a new morning flight connecting New Delhi to Silchar via Guwahati, starting from 20 September. The announcement has been welcomed by local leaders and residents amid ongoing concerns over limited connectivity and soaring airfares in the region.
The flight is expected to ease travel burdens for commuters and strengthen Silchar’s links with the national capital and other regions. However, officials at Silchar Airport have said they are yet to receive confirmation on whether the service will operate daily or follow a specific weekly schedule.
Schedule and Political Backing
According to Barak Valley Development Minister Kaushik Rai, the flight will depart New Delhi at 4:55 am, reach Guwahati by 7:40 am, and land in Silchar at 9:20 am. The return journey will begin at 10:40 am from Silchar, reaching Guwahati by 11:40 am, and finally landing in New Delhi at 2:20 pm.
Minister Rai expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for championing the cause of improved air connectivity in the region. “This new flight will significantly ease travel hardships and strengthen our region’s connection with the rest of the country,” Rai said on social media, also thanking IndiGo for its prompt action.
Push for Regional Connectivity
The announcement follows Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota’s recent visit to Silchar, during which he revealed that Chief Minister Sarma had personally met with the Chairman of IndiGo in New Delhi to advocate for enhanced connectivity for Barak Valley.
Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya had also raised the issue in Parliament, urging the Ministry of Civil Aviation to introduce a direct Silchar–Delhi flight, emphasising its importance for residents, students, and business travellers.
