Guwahati: The Kamrup Metropolitan District Road Safety Committee has directed officials to intensify monitoring of flyovers, regulate e-rickshaw movement and ensure strict implementation of passenger safety measures by 24x7 bars and hotels in Guwahati.
A meeting of the committee was held at the conference hall of the District Commissioner’s Office under the chairmanship of Kamrup Metropolitan District Commissioner Swapnil Paul.
The meeting brought together several senior officials, including District Development Commissioner Manjit Barkakati, Additional District Commissioner Raja Baishya, District Road Safety Committee Member Secretary Abhijit Choudhury, ADCP Traffic-2 Mrinmoy Goswami, Regional Transport Authority Secretary Tamsin Aftab and District Transport Officer Himanshu Kumar Das, along with officials from various concerned departments.
During the meeting, the District Commissioner reviewed the progress of decisions taken in the previous meeting, with focus on improving road safety measures across Guwahati.
The issue of frequent skidding incidents involving two-wheelers on the Maharaja Prithu Flyover during the rainy season was discussed in detail. Paul directed the committee’s sub-committee to conduct regular inspections of all flyovers under its jurisdiction and take preventive steps to reduce accidents.
The committee also discussed the need for better regulation and management of e-rickshaws to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduce congestion in the city.
Safety measures for customers of establishments operating round the clock were also reviewed. Bars and hotels with 24x7 operation permits were directed to continue providing mandatory pick-up and drop-off facilities for customers.
The Excise Department and the District Transport Officer (Enforcement) were instructed to conduct regular monitoring and ensure compliance with the safety guidelines.
The meeting highlighted the importance of coordination among different government departments and the implementation of practical measures to strengthen road safety and traffic management in Guwahati.
