Guwahati: In a significant political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections 2026, Mankachar MLA Aminul Islam joined the Indian National Congress on Tuesday.

Islam was inducted into the party in the presence of senior Congress leader Jitendra Singh, marking a fresh shift in his political alignment.

As per reports, the move comes just days after the legislator had briefly joined the National People's Party (NPP) and filed his nomination under its banner. He later withdrew his candidature without giving any public reason. Prior to that, he had been expelled from the All India United Democratic Front for six years.

Following his entry into the Congress, Islam informed on social media that he held a “fruitful and cordial” meeting with Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh, and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

He said the discussions focused on the development of Mankachar and expressed hope that it would mark the beginning of a new phase.

The MLA also appealed to the public for support, stating that his new political course is aimed at speeding up development work in his constituency.
