Ten-Year Plan to Protect Critical Infrastructure with Homegrown Tech

New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address from the historic Red Fort, announced the launch of ‘Mission Sudarshan Chakra’—a bold, decade-long initiative aimed at bolstering the protection of India’s critical infrastructure through indigenous technological innovation.

The project is envisioned as a multi-layered shield integrating cybersecurity, surveillance, and physical infrastructure safeguards, tailored to India’s evolving strategic threats.

Mythology Meets Modern Strategy

Drawing from Indian epics, the Prime Minister likened the mission’s vision to Lord Krishna shielding the sun with his Sudarshan Chakra during the battle of Kurukshetra. “That divine act changed the course of war. Similarly, India must shield its vital institutions from today’s invisible threats,” he said, weaving together cultural symbolism and contemporary strategy.

Though official specifics remain classified, sources indicate that top research bodies, defence agencies, and private innovators will jointly lead Mission Sudarshan Chakra. The focus will be on securing nuclear plants, defence bases, data centres, transport hubs, and financial systems.

The announcement comes amid rising global concerns around cyberattacks, hybrid warfare, and sabotage of national assets. India, like many nations, has faced repeated warnings about the vulnerability of its critical infrastructure to foreign interference and digital espionage.

Aatmanirbhar Bharat in National Security

The mission ties directly into the Modi government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) campaign. By prioritising homegrown defence and surveillance capabilities, India seeks to enhance its sovereignty and resilience in an increasingly volatile global environment.

“We cannot afford to be reactive,” PM Modi warned. “We must anticipate and prepare.”

As India marks its 79th Independence Day, the unveiling of Mission Sudarshan Chakra stands as both a symbolic gesture and a concrete step toward a secure, self-reliant future—where tradition informs innovation and national pride fuels progress.
