Guwahati: The Security has been significantly tightened near the U Kiang Nangbah statue in Shillong after the East Khasi Hills district administration denied permission for a planned sit-in demonstration by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
Today, heavy security presence was deployed near the life-size statue of legendary freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah, located opposite Civil Hospital, Shillong. The KSU had announced plans to stage a sit-in from 11 am in support of its five-point charter of demands.
Despite the denial, the student body has not yet announced its next course of action. Police have deployed security personnel in large numbers around the proposed protest site to prevent any untoward incident and maintain law and order.
The KSU has also announced similar sit-in programmes across seven districts of the Khasi-Jaintia Hills on 25th August . The heightened security comes amid continued tensions following violence during the KSU’s black-flag bike rally in Shillong on 19th August.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal earlier said Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel were conducting extensive patrols across Shillong to reassure residents and strengthen security. Authorities remain on alert and are closely monitoring key locations across the city.
