GUWAHATI: Continuing with its drive against drunken driving the enforcement department of the district office carried out raids in the Ganeshguri and Guwahati Club area on Friday night and intercepted 47 persons for drunk driving. The department suspended the driving of the errant riders and imposed a fine of Rs 10, 000 on them.
The drive against drunken driving has been intensified across the state after chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had warned of stringent action on drunk driving on the eve of New Year. The CM had warned that all offenders will be detained and had directed the district transport department to act tough on violators. He also instructed the authorities to take adequate measures to prevent drink and drive cases. He has also asked the officials to visit hospitals and ensure adequate availability of doctors to attend emergency accident cases, especially on December 31.
The chief minister had further called for the deployment of sufficient police personnel and SDRF teams near rivers to prevent drowning cases during picnics.
