GUWAHATI: AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal condoled the death of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

In a condolence message today, Ajmal said, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. We have lost a towering personality whose contributions to the economic landscape of India are truly monumental. As Finance Minister, he laid the foundation for an economic revolution that transformed India into one of the most developing nations in the world.”

Ajmal said that Dr. Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister of India was marked by a commitment to inclusive growth and stability, and his policies laid the groundwork for many of the advancements India has made in subsequent years. “His leadership will be remembered for its focus on integrity, economic reform, and social equity. He was not just a distinguished scholar and renowned economist; he was an honest, dedicated, and lovable leader who commanded respect from all quarters, even among his opponents,” Ajmal said.

“He made significant contributions to the nation, which culminated in revolution across various sectors. He designed landmark initiatives for economic growth, social welfare, agricultural reforms, financial inclusion, infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and improving education and making easy access to healthcare facilities for people of the country. He also played a key role in enhancing India’s international relations with other countries, positioning India as a significant player on the global stage,” Ajmal said.

Dr. Manmohan Singh had a significant connection to Assam as he represented the state of Assam in the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament, from 1991 to 2019 for five consecutive terms. “Despite political differences with the Congress party, our party MLAs also voted to elect Dr. Singh to the Rajya Sabha. His tenure as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014 further solidified his influence in national politics, but his ties and special attachment to Assam remain an important part of his identity,” the AIUDF president said.

“My sincere condolences are with the bereaved family, friends, and relatives of Dr. Singh. May we honour his memory by continuing to uphold the values he cherished,” he said.
