GUWAHATI: The State unit of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has condemned the Government for its alleged brutal and anti-people eviction policy and failure to adequately resolve the flood problem.

The party's newly-appointed State president, Ripun Bora said that while there is an need for the Greenfield airport in the Cachar district, the AITC is strongly opposed to the brutal eviction drive. The AITC also condemns the eviction drive against people in Chachal in the city, he said.

Bora said that the AITC will never accept the eviction of the workers of the Dolu Tea Estate in Cachar for construction of a Greenfield airport, especially as the future of the workers has been jeopardize without giving them any means of establishment and livelihood.

He claimed that the BJP and its allies have forgotten their promise to these workers after winning the elections and this is nothing but a fraud by the BJP alliance.

Regarding the eviction drive at Chachal, Bora said that the affected families were earlier provided with electricity connections. The Chief Minister himself had promised to provide land rights to them, he said, and demanded that the Government should clarify in whose interests the eviction drive is now being carried out. He further demanded that the government should make arrangements for rehabilitation of the evicted families.

Bora claimed that although the monsoon season has begun, yet the Government is yet to take any measures to construct embankments. The Water Resources Minister should take full responsibility for those families which are affected by the floods, he said.
