GUWAHATI: The political affairs committee of the APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) has decided to constitute its district-level committees in the run-up to the panchayat poll slated to be held in 2025 in the state.

The political affairs committee of the APCC met at Rajiv Bhawan here today and decided to bring changes in party leaders holding the posts of District Congress Committee (DCC) and Block Congress Committee (BCC) presidents ahead of the panchayat poll.

Present at today's meeting was AICC general secretary and party's Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh.

Speaking to the media after APCC's political affairs committee meeting, APCC president Bhupen Borah said, "The meeting had a six-hour-long discussion on the forthcoming panchayat poll and strengthening party organizations in the state. The meeting decided to form district-level political affairs committees within a week and submit reports to the AICC on the organizational activities of the party at the district level. The meeting said that the district-level political affairs committees will have to take decisions on the appointment of block-level party presidents in the redrawn blocks in the post-delimitation exercise. The meeting made it a point that the new block presidents of the party should be from the below 50 age group party leaders. However, some of the existing block Congress presidents exceeding 50 years of age will continue to hold their posts."

Borah said that today's meeting constituted a three-member committee comprising MP Rakibul Hussain, former MP Ripun Bora, and former MLA Pranati Phukan to oversee the preparations of the party for the ensuing panchayat poll in the state. APCC general secretary Sanju Baruah will be the coordinator of the committee.

Borah further said, "If any party leader wants to propose a candidate for the panchayat poll, he or she will have to propose the candidate in writing. The proposer will remain accountable for the win or defeat of the candidate he has proposed."

Borah said, "In autonomous council polls, we can go for electoral understanding at the district level with anti-BJP and Congress' like-minded parties. However, there are certain problems with such an understanding in the panchayat poll."

Borah said, "The party will go for bringing some changes in the post of district presidents. Priority for the selection of candidates for holding the posts of DCC presidents will be on ensuring representation from tea tribes and other ethnic groups."Borah said that today's meeting gave the final shape to the party's Digital Bahini for carrying out a membership drive in the state. The meeting entrusted Jitendra Singh with AICC's approval of the digital Bahini, he said.

He also said that the political affairs committee of the APCC would meet AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi in January 2025 for holding talks on the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam.

Present at today's political affairs committee meeting of the APCC were Prithviraj Sathe, Manoj Chouhan, and Vikash Upadhaya as AICC representatives; 15 permanent members of the political affairs committee; seven special and invited members; and the presidents of the state Mahila Congress, Congress Sevadol, Youth Congress, and the state committee of the NSUI.
