Assam: ASCPCR receives 4,251 child right violation complaints

GUWAHATI: A programme was organized on the occasion of the 12th State Child Protection Day and the 15th Foundation Day of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The programme was organized in the Conference Hall of the State Commission for Women, preceded by a flag-hoisting ceremony at the ASCPCR office premises.

Dr. Shyamal Saikia, chairperson of the Commission, hoisted the flag in the presence of members and staff. The ASCPCR, in collaboration with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and District Administrations, organized Grievances Redressal Benches/Camps in 10 aspirational districts to address child rights violations. This initiative resulted in the Commission receiving 4,251 complaints from districts including Dhemaji, Tamulpur, and East Karbi Anglong. The Commission forwarded recommendations to the District Administration to ensure the best interests of children in these districts.

In a significant achievement, 862 child labourers were rescued in the state by the District Level Task Force (DLTF) in 32 districts between January 2024 and December 2024. The Commission comprises Dr. Shyamal Saikia as Chairperson, along with seven members.

Dr. Saikia addressed the media, explaining the Commission’s main responsibilities and functions. He expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for his efforts in abolishing child marriage and supporting the ASCPCR’s mission to strengthen child protection mechanisms in the state and giving the opportunity to work collectively.

The Commission’s achievements between January 2024 and December 2024 include awareness programmes, workshops, review meetings, training, and rescue and rehabilitation of child labourers. A special documentary highlighting the vulnerabilities of cybercrime among teenagers was also produced and screened by the Commission.

In his concluding speech, Dr. Saikia thanked the Chief Minister for sanctioning Rs 2 crore for the construction of a new permanent office building for the ASCPCR. He also expressed gratitude to Minister Ajanta Neog for her support to the Commission.
