GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh, on Sunday strongly condemned Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi’s recent remarks, describing them as a grave insult to the Constitution and an affront to the social fabric of Assam.

In a statement issued to the media, BJP State Spokesperson Ranjiv Kumar Sharma said that Gogoi’s comparison of Muslim BJP voters to ‘kafirs’ not only undermined the dignity of Assam’s syncretic society but also wounded the religious sentiments and democratic ethos of the Muslim community. Sharma alleged that Gogoi’s statements reflected his deep-rooted association with anarchist ideologies, left-wing extremism, religious fundamentalism, and anti-India Wahhabism.

Sharma noted that Gogoi’s subsequent apology, issued via a social media video hours after the controversial speech, appeared less an act of sincere contrition and more a calculated move to mitigate political damage. He asserted that seeking forgiveness under public pressure without a tinge of remorse does not absolve the gravity of the offence. He accused Gogoi of exhibiting an unstable and distorted mindset — something, he claimed, the people of Assam had observed repeatedly in the past.

Referring to the specific incident, Sharma said Gogoi, while addressing an election rally, had suggested that Muslims voting for the BJP would be deemed ‘kafirs’ and destined for hell. Such incendiary remarks, Sharma emphasized, constituted an attack on the nation’s democratic ethos, the constitutional right to free and fair voting, and the sanctity of the electoral process itself.

The BJP spokesperson further charged Gogoi with attempting to foment political instability and societal unrest to cultivate his personal vote bank. He called for a collective response to resist such divisive and anarchic efforts. Concluding his remarks, Sharma maintained that no apology could undo the harm caused by such rhetoric and reiterated that Gogoi’s statements amounted to a serious insult to the people of Assam and a violation of constitutional values.
