Guwahati: The worsening condition of Guwahati's roads has become a pressing issue for residents, who face daily struggles navigating through pothole-ridden streets and patchwork repairs.

The lack of long-term planning and quality construction continues to hinder the city's infrastructure development. Streets across Guwahati resemble a patchwork quilt, with uneven surfaces combining bitumen and concrete in a manner far from functional. This ad-hoc approach to road repairs underscores systemic inefficiencies in construction and maintenance processes.

"Travelling on Guwahati roads feels like a punishment," said a local resident from GMCH Road. "The uneven surfaces not only damage vehicles but also increase travel time and cause discomfort.

"Public Works Department (PWD) officials admit that funding delays and resource constraints are contributing factors. Funds have always been an issue. Several contractors are yet to receive estimates submitted to the authorities.

"These delays force contractors to compromise on material quality and workmanship," said a PWD official. Experts emphasize the importance of comprehensive planning in road construction, focusing on load-bearing capacity, drainage, and durability.

However, in Guwahati, such measures are often overlooked. "Scientific studies and execution are mostly out of sync, and the condition of the roads speaks for itself," the official added.

Monsoons aggravate the situation further, as heavy rains and waterlogging weaken the structural integrity of roads. Poor drainage systems only exacerbate the damage, leaving roads unusable for extended periods.

Citizens argue that the deteriorating road conditions impede the city's growth and quality of life. "Roads are the backbone of a city. Without proper infrastructure, Guwahati will always lag behind other cities in terms of development and liveability," another resident stated.

While authorities have promised improvements, no concrete actions have been taken to address these persistent issues. For now, Guwahati's residents are left grappling with the daily frustrations of inadequate infrastructure, waiting for systemic reforms to turn promises into action.
