Assam: Gauhati High Court asks Cachar DC to Survey Encroachment near Monuments

The GHC has directed the DC of Cachar to conduct a survey and initiate demarcation proceedings to ascertain whether a Sericulture Farm near ancient monuments falls within protected land.

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has directed the District Commissioner of Cachar to conduct a survey and initiate demarcation proceedings to ascertain whether a Sericulture Farm near ancient monuments falls within protected land. The order was issued in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) highlighting concerns over encroachment on historically significant sites in Assam, recognized by the Archaeological Survey of India.

The petition alleges that the land adjacent to the monuments has been encroached upon by people and also government departments. In its affidavit, the Sericulture Department stated that the farm has been existing since 1967.The learned Standing Counsel, Sericulture Department, submitted that if the land where the Sericulture Farm is established belongs to ancient monuments, the department will vacate the same but, prior to that a demarcation process is required to be done by the Revenue Department.

The court has directed the District Commissioner, Cachar to initiate and complete the survey and demarcation proceed within four weeks thereafter, and submit a report before this Court.

The registry is directed to list this matter again after six weeks on a date to be fixed by it.
