GUWAHATI: The bench of Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court issued notices to the Principal Secretary to the Department of Women and Child Development, the public information officer to the Directorate of Women and Child Development, the Director of Women and Child Development (first appellate), and the Commissioner of the State Information Commission, Assam, returnable within weeks relating to a writ petition (105/2025).
Through an RTI application, petitioner Nripen Malakar sought information from the Directorate of Women and Child Development on the amount of funds sanctioned date-wise by the Directorate from October 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023, under the SNP (Supplementary Nutrition Programme) scheme of take-home ration and hot cooked meal, the total number of beneficiaries of the scheme, the names of the NGOs that were given an extension of the time period for supply, and whether any approval was sought from the Principal Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department for the extension, etc.
However, neither the PIO of the Directorate of Women and Child Development nor the Director of Women and Child Development (first appellate) and the Commissioner of the State Information Commission, Assam (second appellate) provided the petitioner the information sought, leading him to file this writ petition before the high court seeking its intervention and a direction to the respondent authorities to provide the information sought.
