Guwahati: The state government in Assam has so far paid little attention to addressing the problems faced by disabled persons. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to physically challenged individuals as ‘Divyang’ and assured full support from the government, Assam has yet to witness any such benefits, unlike other states. They threatened the government to focus on solving issues of disabled persons or face statewide protests. This serious allegation has been raised by the Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha Assam (PSSA).

Today, the organization’s secretary, Nripen Malakar, stated to the media that while there was a provision to provide Rs 1,000 per month under the Deendayal Divyang Pension Scheme, many disabled individuals have been deprived of this benefit since it was merged with the Orunodoi scheme last year.

Meanwhile, the Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha Assam, which has been actively raising the voices of disabled persons, mentioned that after their protests, the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment had promised in writing on November 30 to hold a high-level committee meeting in December to address the issues of disabled persons. However, the promise has not yet been fulfilled, leading to dissatisfaction among the members.

The organization has warned that protests will be held in every district headquarters of the state from Magh Bihu till January 26, to demand solutions to their issues.
