Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Sunday paid his rich tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of this statesman, educationist and a staunch nationalist at a commemorative event held at Raj Bhavan.

Paying floral homage to Dr. Mookerjee, the Governor lauded his enduring contributions to India’s unity and cultural identity.

In his address on the occasion, Acharya hailed Dr. Mookerjee as “a blessed son of Bharat who dedicated his life to the integrity, sovereignty, and pride of the nation.”

Highlighting the lasting legacy of Dr. Mookerjee, the Governor described him a visionary pioneer of cultural nationalism, whose influence spans education, governance, and national integration. Recalling his tenure as one of the youngest Vice Chancellors of Calcutta University at just 33, Acharya highlighted his remarkable intellect and leadership that laid the foundation of India’s modern education system.

“Dr. Mookerjee believed in the power of cultural identity as a force for unity, not division. His ideas, even in today’s era of globalization, call upon us to reflect deeply on our national pride and purpose,” the Governor said.

Reflecting on Dr. Mookerjee’s political vision, Acharya hailed his firm stand on national integration, particularly his opposition to Article 370. Quoting the leader’s historic words, “A single country cannot have two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two flags” the Governor remarked that the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 was a fulfillment of Dr. Mookerjee’s vision of a united India.

Underscoring Dr. Mookerjee’s strong commitment to the Northeast, the Governor spoke of his collaborative efforts with Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi during the Partition to preserve Assam’s place in India,” stated a press release.
