GUWAHATI: APCC's (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) Gorkha Cell has said that the Gorkhas of Assam were developed during the Congress regime. On the contrary, the BJP-led government gave only assurances that were never translated into reality, the Cell said.

Briefing the media by the general secretary (organization) of the Cell, Om Prakash Bosnet said, "Assam has 25 lakh Gorkha voters who can play a decisive role in as many as 15 LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies). These voters saw the light of development during the Congress regime, but not during the BJP period. It was the Congress government that included the Gorpkhas of the State as OBC (Other Backward Classes), made arrangement for issuing Gorkha Domicile certificates, created 100 posts of Nepali teachers and formed the Gorkha Development Corporation.

"This time around, the Congress has made a slew promises for the development of the Gorpkas of the State, including the formation of Gorkha Autonomous Council, according ST status to 13 Gorkha communities, constitutional rights to the Gorkhas through Clause VI of the Assam Accord, land rights to Gorkhas of Sixth Schedule areas, besides solving the problem of 'D' voters."
